Between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29, we need you to make as many iNat wildlife observations as possible. All iNaturalist observations from Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Buena Vista, Covington, Highland, Lexington, Rockbridge, Staunton, Waynesboro City/Counties will automatically be counted towards the Challenge.

Hello!
Just wanted to remind everyone that today through Monday is the Kansas City - City Nature Challenge, and anyone who uploads observations from any of the nine counties that make up the Greater Kansas City Metro Area will have their data included in that annual project (as well as our ongoing scavenger hunt).

Due to a confluence of external circumstances, I will be limited in my perambulations for this year's CNC. That said, I live in a hot spot of urban biodiversity, so my intention is to thoroughly document the fauna and flora of Salton Drive over the period of April 26-29 with every tool at my disposal. Amazing work everyone! So happy to report that at just shy of 1:30 on the first day we have already made 640 observations and have identified 238 species, we are certainly well on our way of reaching our goal. Hi friends,
Last fall we reintroduced fire to a portion of the flood plain near Falcon Shelter for the first time in generations in an effort to stimulate the dormant species to come back up. Now it is time to see what we stimulated.

We suspect the first 3 years since the fire disturbance to see a lot of invasive species including nonnatives, but we also hope to get an idea of what ecosystem also exists there from the historical ecosystem.

The 2024 City Nature Challenge has begun!

We are looking at another less than ideal weather weekend, but I think we can just remind ourselves we need the rain and CNC anyway (as long as it's safe of course!).
